Free Pattern: ‘Fancier' Fingerless Gloves

Here’s what you’ll need for this project

  • Size 3.5mm circular needles or DPNs

  • DK weight yarn

  • 3 stitch markers

  • Scrap yarn to hold stitches

The Cuff

Cast on 40 stitches with a pair of 3.5mm needles or DPNs.

Place a stitch marker (SM) and join in the round. Knit across one round.

(OPTIONAL) To knit a simple + sweet detail, work 1x1 rib (knit one, purl one) for one round.

Continue working in stockinette stitch (knit all stitches) until your piece measures approx. 10 cm or length desired.

At the start of the next round: Knit the next 7 stitches, place SM, knit until the end of the round.

You will now begin to make increases to shape the thumb opening. Follow the two steps below a total of 5 times.

  • Row 1: Knit 1 stitch, M1L, knit 6 stitches, slip marker, M1R, knit to the end of the round.

  • Row 2: Knit all stitches.

You now have 50 stitches on the needles.

At the beginning of the next round, knit 1 stitch, and then slip the next 16 stitches onto a spare needle or string. You will leave these aside as you knit the ‘4-finger opening’.

The ‘4-Finger Opening’

With the remaining 34 stitches active on the needles, cast on 6 stitches and join in the round.

Work all 40 stitches in stockinette stitch until your piece measures 3.5 cm from the thumb opening, or length desired.

(OPTIONAL) Knit in 1x1 (knit one, purl one) for one round.

Knit across one round.

Cast off all stitches.

The Thumb

Slide the 16 stitches onto the needles. Place a stitch marker (1) and pick up 6 stitches along the side of the ‘4-finger opening’.

Place a stitch marker at the centre of the picked up stitches (2) and knit in the round for 1 row.

Decrease round - complete the steps below a total of 2 times:

  • Row 1: Knit until the 2 stitches before the marker, knit 2 together, slip the marker, SSK (slip, slip, knit through the back loop).

  • Row 2: Knit all stitches.

You now have 20 stitches on the needles.

Next, continue knitting in the round until the thumb opening measures 2.5 cm from pick up round, or length desired.

Cast off all stitches.
